The crowd was on hand Saturday at Dazzle Jazz Club to celebrate Charles "Charlie" Burrell's 98th Birthday. Charles was a classical and jazz bass player most prominently known for being the first African-American to be a member of a major American symphony (the San Francisco Symphony). For this accomplishment, he is often referred to as “the Jackie Robinson of Classical Music”. A band led by jazz artist Purnell Steen, with a number of special guest singers and musicians played some of Charlie's favorite songs. A special portrait painted by artist Dwayne Glapion was presented to Charles and will be on permanent display at the club in a room named after Mr. Burrell.

It was a night of inspired poetry and stunning artwork. Some of Colorado's top spoken word poets, in front of a standing room only crowd, performed passionate poems written to selected art works of Dwayne Glapion. The poets Mahogany, Lucifury, Henock Wolde, Karen Grissom, Niyah Owens, Quriocity, MoBetta, and Reality set the house on "Fiyah!!" The wide range of subjects and the intensity of the performances provoked deep thought, emotion and pride. The night closed with a special presentation by Dwayne Glapion of a painting he had done of Dr. Paul Hamilton called "A Fundi's Wisdom" to thank him for his teaching, mentoring, support for the arts and over 50 years of service to the community.
